Woodworking Bench Plans, Love Your Porch Again

Posted on 31st March 2011 by Woodworker in Uncategorized

Wouldn’t it be nice to sit on the perfect bench and enjoy your porch or back yard? Or maybe you have been looking for the perfect piece for your vestibule so you can sit and take your shoes off when you get home. With the suitable set of woodworking bench plans you can make exactly what you need and want.

It is a lot easier than you might think to construct a bench. With a good set of plans and a weekend’s worth of time, plus a small investment in materials you can make that perfect piece. It doesn’t matter if you are not a master craftsman, or that you don’t have a massive woodworking shop.

There are many different woodworking bench plans out there. I know because I have looked at many of them. In my opinion I recommend that you stay away from any thing that says free. At best you get an exploded outlook diagram with not much information. At worst you get an advertisement for something with an never-ending stream of emails trying to sell you more stuff.

After awhile I found an online library of woodworking plans with more than fourteen thousand different projects. Yes I did say over 14,000 individual plans (for only fifty bucks too). I know seems impossible, but it is true.

The coolest thing is that not only did I get the plans I also got a password to the member’s only area where, get this, they have limitless use of an extensive video tutorial library! All the tricky stuff can be watched on a step by step video showing precisely how to do it.

I discovered so much, all kinds of little tips and tricks that the pros use that make different operations so much easier. And this is stuff I would have never been able to figure out on my own.

So armed with my super duper woodworking bench plans (which there are about 25 different designs to choose from) I made the decision to make my bench. I printed out the material list that came with the plans complete with all the hardware I would need (fasteners too), and went to the lumber yard. With everything I spent less than $300.00 and that included the wood finish.

My bench came out flawlessly! My wife and I sincerely enjoy taking a cup of tea and going and sitting on our bench in our back yard and watching our kids as they get all silly with each other running around. It really does not get much better than this.

And to think, I almost spent $1700.00 on a bench that pales in contrast to the one I made. Anybody can do this. If you have the least bit of interest in this, I encourage to spend the few dollars on these wonderful woodworking bench plans.

Do you want to create your own furnishings out of wood? Do want the pieces you make to come out perfect every time? All you need is an simple to use complete collection of furniture woodworking plans.

I have always enjoyed working with wood. I started out framing houses and then it was doing interior trim and one weekend it occurred to me that I desired to try and create a coffee table. Well that table was not what I would call a master piece, in actuality it was kinda crummy.

A year or so went by and the thought came to me yet again, this time it was an entertainment hutch for my Television and stuff. Remembering how frustrated I was with the coffee table, I went looking for a set of plans.

Of course at the outset I looked at all the so called free furnishings woodworking plans. Everything I found that was free was either just an exploded diagram or an advertisement for some product like Minwax stain or something. So I dug deeper.

What I discovered eventually would change my thinking about what I was capable of in the woodworking world…

I discovered a downloadable online collection of over 14,000 different woodworking project plans – yep, more than Fourteen thousand different plans. Yes it cost money, but not a lot; especially when you consider how easy to use these plans are, that they come with whole material and hardware lists, have great on paper instruction, crystal clear details and get this – they even come with a member’s only area with video tutorials!

So I bought them. I figured what the heck, they have a cash back guarantee; if they are poor quality I will just return them – that is precisely the very last thing I would ever do. These plans are great.

There was more than 25 different designs for entertainment centers. I picked the one I liked, reviewed it, printed out the material and hardware list and I was on my way to the store to get everything.

I chose alder wood (desired sort of a rural look) and got all the hardware and it only cost me a little more than two hundred and eighty bucks for everything – including the clear coat.

These furnishings woodworking plans are really simple to use. That being said I was having a little trouble setting up my jig for the dove tail drawers, I watched the video on that exact topic and after the video it was easy to accomplish. My drawers cam out perfect.

In reality the whole project turned out great! Since then I have started on a coffee table – alder wood to match the TV hutch.

With more than 14,000 furniture woodworking plans, the way I look at it I have more than a lifetime of projects ahead of me. If you like woodworking you need this.

DIY Woodworking Plans – Your Own Furniture By Your Own Hand

Posted on 27th March 2011 by Woodworker in Uncategorized

You don’t need to be a master woodworker to build furniture and other wood projects, what you need are good DIY woodworking plans. Sincerely, with the right plans and maybe a little bit of video instruction, if you have basic woodworking skills you can construct just about anything.

Have you been to the furniture store lately. Even the low-priced stuff costs a lot of money.

Case in point; we needed a new bed and wanted a Captains Bed. You know the kind with the storage below. We shopped around one Saturday and went to 5 different stores. The least expensive Captains Bed we could find was seventeen hundred dollars! And it was not even very nice.

It was mostly particle board and the only hardwood was on the trim on the drawer fronts and particular on the head board and foot board.

We did see one bed we really loved but it was four thousand dollars! Sure we could have bought it, on credit and paid for it for three years or whatever – but we did not want to do that.

Instead I took a picture with my phone and my thinking was that as long as I had a picture I could build it. Well that is not completely accurate.

It did not take long for me to figure out that I was not going to figure this out with out help. I consulted one of my friends who is a expert carpenter and he was very quick to tell me that what I needed was a plan.

What I needed was certain DIY woodworking plans, but where to get them? I went to the hardware store and there were certain books but they were hard to understand.

I was prepared to give up when certain guy I did not even know began talking to me at the book store (where I was looking for woodworking plans), and told me to try searching on the internet.

Sure enough I found a whole bunch of them. This brought up another problem, which ones were any good, which ones do I buy?

So what I did was my home work. I started reading all reviews and going to forums and checking every product for what I wanted. What I wanted was straightforward to use and read DIY woodworking plans. Plans that were down-loadable but from an actual company that I could call to get customer service if I needed it, oh and certain video instruction of a few sort would be nice to.

The good news is that they are out there. There is certainly a couple of very good companies offering these kinds of products.

Long story short, I bought some plans and built a bed. It was simpler than I thought and took less time, and are you all set for this, only cost me $450.00!

The woodworking world is your oyster. Now we all can have whatever furniture we want.

            Doors And Their Components.

Posted on 16th March 2011 by Woodworker in Woodworking Articles

            Doors and their components.

All internal and external doors are made up of different components. Some internal and modern composite doors are made using many different industrial techniques, but in this instance we will explain the basic make up of a traditionally made, solid external door.
There are 3 main parts to any traditional style of door.
            1. The Rails
            2. The Stiles
            3. The Panels
As you look at a fully fitted door, you will notice there is a hinge side and an opening side. You should notice the timber on both of these vertical sides runs straight through (i.e. from the very top to the very bottom of the door) these parts of the door are the stiles.

The stiles give the door its rigidity and act as a receptacle for the rails.
The rails are the lengths of timber you see spanning the door horizontally, and are housed at either end into the stiles.
With two rails and two stiles you have yourself a basic frame!

Now the third and final component, panels. The amount of rails you have will determine the amount of panels. Each panel will fit inside the opening made by the frame and be housed in the grooves on all 4 sides.

The moulds and patterns on the panels and frames can vary from door to door and we will cover these in our next section……..Mouldings, Patterns and Cutters.

            Variations of doors.
Many modern styles and newly manufactured interior doors are no longer made in the traditional fashion. A lot of these cheaper doors (usually standard white 2, 4 and 6 panel interior doors, found in new build developments) are known as ‘egg box’ doors. They are given this nick name due to the way the door is manufactured.

These doors are constructed from 2 sheets (front and back) of 4mm MDF. The pattern, shape or moulding on these doors is pressed into the MDF to create the effect of real panels and mouldings. Then the MDF sheets are attached to a softwood pine frame, usually pinned together rather than the traditional mortice and tennon.

The centre or core of the door is filled with an upright mesh of cardboard honey combs. Although cardboard does not sound like the ideal material for a doors construction, these doors are more substantial than they may sound. They are also very cheap to produce due to their low cost materials, low quantity of materials required, and most importantly, the ability to mass produce these doors in there thousands with less processes and traditional skills needed to construct a solid timber door.
