Amazon.com Review
This is a book for people who have some interest in woodworking and some familiarity with woodworking tools. However, one needn’t be a professional woodworker to tackle some of these handsome and, yes, elegant woodworking projects. I have been inspired to tackle two projects in the book for gifts already, and I bet it gets you going, too! … More >>

The Beauty of Wooden Furniture in your Home

Posted on 22nd September 2011 by Woodworker in Woodworking Articles

, , ,

Trends in the home vary from time to time. At some point as glass tables and other glass products were the main product and at other times a solid oak table was often the must have. To me wooden furniture never dies out, it has such a timeless look. They’re built with strength and unlike glass don’t brake easily and gives the home a contemporary look.

Wood is not high maintenance and stains can easily be removed if spilt onto the product. There are many types of wood choices available such as oak, maple, mahogany and teak with many people agreeing that teak is the most durable and needs very little maintenance and that mahogany is great for its red hue colour. People feel closer to nature with wooden furniture and they’re great for bedroom ideas with vast ranges of wardrobes, beds and bedside drawers and cabinets available.

Up until the industrial revolution all furniture was generally made from wood until more materials became available such as steel, aluminium, plastic and glass. Now however wooden furniture is available at any budget whether the product is mass produced or hand made to perfection. Wood can be carved into styles unlike many of its other modern materials making a home warm and inviting instead of the cold look of glass and steal.

There is nothing that wooden furniture won’t go with in a home. Generally a mixture of modern materials and wooden furniture would complement a home very well.

Interior Decorating: Wood is Back in Fashion

Guest post written by Crispin Jones.

Interior decorating trends change every year, but there’s one timeless look that is enjoying a resurgence at the moment – wood. Wooden floors, faux wooden wallpaper, oak interior doors, and wooden fascias are becoming popular again, and it’s no surprise. Oak doors are heavy, sturdy, impressive looking, and, as an added bonus, great for fire doors and for security purposes. Real wood doors will make your home feel cosier and safer, and for the exterior, traditional or modern designed wooden doors offer a combination of homeliness and class that is hard to beat.

Doing out your entire home in quality woods would be an expensive proposition, but wooden floors are a great way to brighten up certain rooms. There are some rooms that are probably better off having carpets – for example bedrooms, and perhaps the living room, but for the kitchen, bathroom, and child’s den, wooden floors are great. They’re easy to clean, and they are ideal for making a room light and airy.

Your oak interior doors will look out of place with standard woodchip wallpaper, but that’s easily fixed. You can accent your oak doors with flock wallpaper or treat your walls to some heritage colour paints. Even the lower cost versions of this have come a long way in recent years. They are now hard-wearing, washable, and almost indistinguishable from real wood at a glance. Of course, the difference will become apparent when the wallpaper is touched, but the appearance is great.

If you have oak interior doors, then you may as well consider oak doors for outside the house too. In that case, faux wooden fascias might be the finishing touch to your house. Combine this with beautiful soffits and you will be well on track to having a beautiful home.

Investing in wooden fascias, wooden floors, and other additions can be a good way to increase the value of your home. While carpets and wallpaper are simply temporary decorations, wooden floors are seen as more permanent additions, and are likely to increase the value of your home in the eyes of prospective buyers. Considering they are fairly low cost additions, they’re well worth investing in. Compared to other ways that you can increase your home’s value, this is a way that will offer a quick and comparatively large return on investment.

Even if you aren’t considering selling your home in the near future, there’s a lot to be said for re-decorating. If you’re feeling down and in need of a holiday, then doing up your house can be a low cost way to brighten things up. It’s not the same as going away, but having something different to look at can be the next best thing. Not only that, but wood floors are easy to clean, which can be a big weight off your back if you’re accustomed to high-maintenance carpets.

Wood is timeless, where other styles can go out of fashion, oak interior doors will age well, and can look better over time. Oak doors, for your exterior, can make the difference between a drab house, and a welcoming home.

This post was written by Crispin Jones on behalf of UK Oak Doors who stock an incredible range of oak doors including oak interior doors. Crispin enjoys interior design as well as writing on the subject.
